Yesterday I went to JFK airport in New York

an agricultural specialist at customs and border patrol showed me how he deals with food

smuggled into the country. But agricultural specialists deal with a lot more than just food.

They also have to worry about smuggled plants and animals.

I asked a Border Patrol employee, what's the worst thing that's been caught at JFK?

What's the one thing that's been caught at JFK? And he told me about a flight back in

2021 coming from Ghana.

A man was caught with a bag full of stuff. There was ox tail, dried beef, and turkey berries,

but that was not a big deal compared to what else he had stashed away.

He had 22 giant African land snails.

And they are giant. They can grow up to 8 inches long.

Look them up on YouTube and you'll see videos of these snails the size of your hand.

Giant African lance nails are considered one of the most

damaging snails in the world. They can destroy agriculture, spread diseases, and make people's lives

miserable. And once they get into a place that they like it's very very hard to get them out.

There's one state that's been dealing with these snails for over a half century and that's Florida.

Leading the fight against these snails is Dr Trevor Smith,

director of the division of plant industry at the Florida Department of Agriculture.

And in Florida, the Department of Agriculture is a serious operation.

I mean, we have a very, very large, the largest State Department of Agriculture in the country here.

But the largest State Department of Agriculture in the country has met its match when it comes to these snails.
