Summary

Jen Psaki reflects on the eye-popping revelations from the House Ethics Committee about Matt Gaetz, and how it shows that Trump's GOP clearly lives by a different standard -- a lower one. Jen is joined by Rep. Jasmine Crockett and MSNBC host Katie Phang to react to the committee's findings, including whether Gaetz could still be held accountable. Next, Jen is joined by political analyst Brendan Buck and reporter Annie Karni to preview the upcoming fight for Speaker of the House in the wake of the Gaetz bombshell. Then, Jen shares some thoughts on the precarious relationship between president-elect Trump and Elon Musk and how difficult their inevitable breakup may be. Later, Jen is joined by Rep. Jim Himes to discuss whether Musk is using his proximity to the presidency to benefit himself financially and concerns about Musk handling sensitive information. Finally, Jen is joined by Former White House Counsel Bob Bauer and Former Assistant Attorney General Jack Goldsmith to discuss Trump's plans to dismantle government and push the limits of presidential power in a second term.

So we got a bombshell today during what is usually one of the quietest weeks in Washington all year.

0:16.0

The House Ethics Committee released its final report on Matt Gates, the now former Republican Congressman and

0:21.0

breakout Magistar, who Trump wanted to be his attorney general. Now, it does cover some things

0:26.6

we basically knew before. I mean, we knew from multiple reports that Gates had paid women for sex.

0:31.7

We knew one of those women was alleged to have been underage, and we knew Gates ultimately

0:36.3

did not face federal charges

0:37.9

for his conduct. But the committee's findings in this 42-page report were still eye-popping,

0:44.4

and maybe a little too vivid in the level of detail at times. And they assert that Gates

0:48.8

did likely break the law. Overall, they concluded that, quote, there was substantial evidence

0:54.0

that Representative Gates

0:55.0

violated House rules, state and federal laws, and other standards of conduct prohibiting

0:59.8

prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, acceptance of impermissible gifts, the provision

1:05.7

of special favors and privileges, and obstruction of Congress, that's just part of the report.

1:12.3

And the gritty details back up a whole lot of the reporting over the years about Gates's

1:16.2

creepy conduct. It also says, quote, from 2017 to 2020, Gates made tens of thousands of dollars

1:23.1

in payments to women that the committee determined were likely in connection with

1:26.6

sexual activity and

1:28.0

or drug use. In fact, according to committee's investigators, he paid 12 women, almost $100,000

1:34.7

during that time frame. Among those women was victim A, a minor who at the time of her encounter

1:42.0

with Gates in 2017 had just completed her junior year of high school.

1:47.6

Let that sit with you for just a second. In her testimony to the committee, she recalled receiving

1:52.1

$400 in cash from Representative Gates, which she understood to be payment for sex.
