Summary

Mike and Jay open with a look at the G7 meeting in Quebec, Canada. They agree that President Trump's protectionism is bad policy, though Jay still thinks that the president might be using his tough talk as a negotiating tactic and may not impose long-term tariff barriers. Mike says that President Trump's call to readmit Russia to the group is a horrible idea because, unlike the G7 countries, Russia is not a real democracy. Then it's a discussion of the Supreme Court's 7-2 ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. The Guys agree that this was a very narrow ruling (in scope, not vote split) and that the Court should have addressed the key free expression issue that was raised. Although Mike is a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights, he thinks the concurrence of Justices Gorsuch and Thomas, which argues that forcing the baker to create a cake for a same-sex wedding is a form of unconstitutional compelled speech, makes some strong points. After that, it's immigration - first the move by House GOP moderates to force a vote on allowing Dreamers to stay in the country legally, and then a discussion of rising illegal border crossing arrests, the wisdom of the Trump administration's 'family separation' and 'zero tolerance' policies, and a big-picture look at what U.S. immigration policy should be. Finally, Mike and Jay talk about President Trump's commutation of Alice Marie Johnson's sentence and his view that he can pardon himself, if he so chooses. Welcome to the politics, guys, a place for a bipartisan, rational, and civil debate on American politics and policy.

0:06.2

I'm Michael Barronowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University.

0:09.9

With me today is my regular co-host, Cleveland Area Attorney and Republican Factotum, Jay Carson.

0:15.1

Good morning, Mike.

0:16.0

How are you doing today, Jay?

0:17.4

Well, it's a dark day in Cleveland, but I'm here nonetheless. Yes, we'll try to

0:24.8

put that behind us and get on with the weekend news, but yes, I too am mourning the end of

0:33.5

perhaps an era. But anyway, that would be for another podcast. So, you know, I thought we'd start

0:38.1

once again with trade. This week, the G7 countries, which are the world's seven largest

0:44.8

developed democratic economies, are meeting in Quebec, Canada. Now, the mood was understandably

0:51.4

tense given President Trump's cavalier use, I'd call it, of a highly

0:56.9

questionable national security trade law provision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum.

1:02.7

And he's using that because under that provision doesn't need congressional approval to put

1:07.0

these tariffs in place.

1:08.6

Now, just prior to the meeting, the president suggested that Russia be admitted to the group,

1:13.9

or rather be readmitted to the group.

1:15.7

And it was a part of that when it was called a G8 from 1997 until 2014 when its membership

1:22.4

was suspended due to its unlawful annexation of Crimea.

1:27.4

Now, President Trump's push for these tariffs, which have been talking about for a while,

1:32.0

and his clear lack of interest in multilateral diplomacy, I think they've been consistent themes of his presidency.

1:39.1

And it's something that a lot of people, including me, believe is, you know, potentially weakening the international

1:45.9

system economically and also in terms of security, perhaps. And this, of course, is something
