Nearly 150 years ago, just before the dawning of the calamitous age of world Wars, Genocides, Holocaust, and ideological triage in the 20th century, a French bookseller set up a modest stall in the

Eclectic English Market Square at Cambridge.

The son of a Parisian antiquarian, Gustav David, was born in 1860 during the

heady days of the second Bonapartist Empire. Having from infancy been steeped in the trade of rare

manuscripts, quartoes, octavos, vadeemikums, estate sales, and auctions.

As a teen, he moved first to London, then to Garleston, before arriving in Cambridge in 1890.

He had gained a keen eye for extraordinary literary finds. He often stocked fine first

editions of Dickens, Trollope, Scott, Thackeray, Austin, Carlisle, Chalmers, and Spurgeon,

as well as rare early editions of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Bunyan, Owen, Spencer, Johnson, Pope,

Addison, and all the classics of the English literary legacy. He often would also stock

essential reading copies of foreign language editions of Cota, Schilleriller, and DeMopisans, Servantes,

and Dostoevesky. There had long been a tradition of good secondhand and antiquarian bookshops

in England, and more than a few in Cambridge, but it seemed none could match G. David's stall for coveted,

uncommon, classic volumes. He kept his prices low so that even frugal students were able to build

their fledgling personal literary collections.
