Summary

The future can be scary for some of us. It’s normal to be uncomfortable with the unknown and uncertain. But future tripping, the act of making your way into the future and tripping over what exists, is not an effective way of handling your worries. This kind of thinking can easily create more worry and concern for what lays ahead. Though it may be hard, working to stay in the present and remain focused on the task right in front of you is a better way of handling what you may be anxious about.

LESSONS:

  • Future Tripping: When you place yourself in the future and trip over, or imagine yourself failing, before you have even begun.
  • Work to remain present through deep breathing and focus on the next best thing that you can implement to move your forward.
  • Remember, the future is out of your control but your present state is very much available to you.

And today we're talking about future tripping.

So future tripping is basically when we trip over the future before it's even happened.

And we've all done it, right?

We imagine something in the future and we begin to already make assumptions and make conclusions about how that's going to happen

and we trip over those conclusions or assumptions, right?

And the reason why this is not such a great tactic to use is because it can prevent us actually

from moving forward and from gaining momentum in the present.

So just imagine like this, let's say you signed up for your first Spartan sprint and

you're imagining the rope climb and you're already thinking to yourself there's

no way I can get up that rope climb.

Well, then your next thought might be,

I might as well not race anyway.

You're tripping over the future, okay?

Or let's say you've got a presentation at work, right there's somebody who's going to be in that meeting who you know is rather critical and if you have that thought

they're not going to like this anyway then you may actually shift the way that your presentation is going
