We are learning about fungi today at least a basic and I do mean basic overview of fungi because there are over a hundred thousand different types of fungi.

There are many people who think that there are over a million more waiting to be discovered.

We of course cannot talk about all of those, let alone even

a hundred of those in today's show. But what we can do is we can talk about their role in the

soil food web, why they're important for gardeners and why we need to understand, at least on a basic level, how they work, so we can utilize them in our gardens.

Now, let's get into fungi. Fungi are at least for a while they were considered

plants but because they do not photosynthesize they have been separated out from the plant kingdom

But what's going on with fungi? Why are they so important and why are they so

so talked about if you're ever reading about

gardening and the importance of fungi well

they do a lot of interesting things in the soil.

They can break down things that bacteria, which we talked about earlier in this week,

cannot.

So bacteria will often go for simple sugars, the easier to digest sugars.
