15 15 Silent Film The Birth of a Nation is a fictionalized account of the relationship between two families during

the Civil War and its aftermath. And while it is famous for the technological advances it contained, it is more famous for the technological advances it contained? It is more famous for its

controversial subject matter. The Washington Post has called the movie quote

the most reprehensibly racist film in Hollywood history.

I would tend to agree.

The depictions of African Americans,

played mostly by white actors in black face, portray them as sexually

aggressive, idiotic, and savage.

They are seen sexually assaulting white women throughout the film.

And guess who comes to the women's aid?

The heroes of the movie, the Koo Klux Clan.

In fact, in this film, the K K K K are not only protecting the white women,

but also American values, all while espousing their white supremacy message.

You're beginning to see the problem here, right?

Though some cities refuse to release the film and civil rights organizations

protested. The film caused the K K K to surge in popularity.

And if you can believe it, their merchandise such as kitchen aprons and hats were popular, as well as

clam-themed balls and parties.
