Summary

Vanessa and Casper return to the theme of "frustration" in chapter two of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." This week we discuss the psychology of Mundungus Fletcher, the heroism of Mrs. Figg, and Dudley's crumbling sense of his own supremacy. Our question this week is: When does frustration enable learning?

Next week we're reading chapter three, The Advance Guard, through the theme of compassion. Thanks this week to Rabbi Max Chaiken for our voicemail.

Hi everyone, we have an exciting update. We are launching our What Matters course.

0:06.8

Div School available to the masses. It is a season of close reading and

0:12.6

community and it starts this August and registration is open now.

0:17.0

Vanessa, you know it's better than Div School because no one's going to require you to take

0:20.2

Biblical Greek. It's true. Oh, maybe they will. What, so what are you going to require

0:26.0

to read? No Biblical Greek here Matt. We are going to be reading a tale for the

0:32.0

time being by Ruth Ozeki, my brilliant friend by Elena Feronte and Transcendent Kingdom

0:37.3

by Yagyasi. And we are going to be using these books in conversation with the practices

0:42.8

of sacred reading, storytelling, and chaplaincy in order for people to figure out what matters

0:48.3

to them, what values they hold and how to better live up to them.

0:52.1

Vanessa, I joked about this being better than Div School but I taught a class for you

0:55.8

in the last round of What Matters and it was seriously one of the most fulfilling teaching

1:00.0

experiences I've had in recent years. Like the group you had was so engaged and so invested

1:05.4

in the conversation and so honest and open with their questions and also with receiving answers.

1:11.5

I mean I taught a book that I've taught many times and written about many times and I learned

1:15.7

many new things from your community and it's an experience I'm still really grateful for.

1:19.6

Yeah, I think part of that Matt is just that it's a really small cohort that stays together

1:24.4

all year and there are three, I was going to say incredible professors, I'm one of them but you know

1:30.9

two other really wonderful teachers and the cohort just really bonds and each of the teachers gets

1:38.0

one on one time or small group time with this group and it just sounds like being a really meaningful

1:43.5

experience. So if you are looking for some meaning making in your life or if you like what we're

1:49.2

up to on Harry Potter and the Sacred Text we really think that you will enjoy What Matters.
