of the Speaker of the House, Capitol Police are asking for more resources to protect

lawmakers.

There will be certain people here on Capitol Hill who will say, you guys aren't doing

a very good job protecting us in the first place. Why are we spending the money?

I'm Ryan Schmelz. Bringing out the big guns, as multiple midterm races go down to the

wire, presidents, former presidents, vice presidents, and many more big names are hitting the

campaign trail in key races. What kind of impact are they having? And how does this cycle

stack up with ones from the past?

I would argue that former president Barack Obama is a much more significant surrogate, helping

Democrats get more engaged than the current sitting president Joe Biden.

We've learned a lot this week about the attack late last week at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's

home.

State and federal law enforcement say the invasion that left Paul Pelosi, the speaker's

husband, seriously injured from an assault with a hammer, was politically motivated.

The suspect, 42-year-old David DePap, was carrying tape and rope. And later told police,

his aim was to take the speaker hostage and break her kneecaps if she lied. It's raised

questions about the security of lawmakers from both parties facing an alarming number

of threats. And this week, the chief of the Capitol Police said his department needs more

resources to ensure members of Congress and their families are protected. That of course

will mean money and a debate over spending in the new Congress.
