Summary

Originally released in 2020.

No player is referred to as Arkansas' G.O.A.T.—greatest of all time—more than Darren McFadden. And rightfully so: He’s one of the best running backs in college football history. But for the Little Rock native, the path to greatness wasn’t always apparent. For one, he had to overcome obstacles in his childhood. And that’s where football came in, serving as an escape of sorts for McFadden and keeping him out of trouble. On the field, McFadden quickly proved to be an elite talent, but only had eyes for the Razorbacks. And after starting his Arkansas career down on the depth chart, McFadden quickly made a name for himself, setting a school freshman rushing record and earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors. As a sophomore, he would lead Arkansas to the SEC championship game and become the school’s first Heisman Trophy finalist. He repeated that feat a year later, and wrapped up a three-year career having provided some of the most iconic moments in Razorback history. Is Darren McFadden the greatest of all time? That’s for each Razorback fan to decide. But this is how he captivated a state and made the people of Arkansas proud.

This week features Arkansas legend Darren McFadden. Just the way that I grew up in everything that I've been through in life, I tell people that I wouldn't change any of it, man, because it made me the person who I am today. Being the nice that you're at home, you're struggling, you know, you don't have anything to eat, you don't know what's going on, your mom may not be at home at the time. You know, I don't talk about it with a lot of people, and they always see me smile and laughing. They don't assume that I've been through any hard times in life and things like there, right there. But like I say, at this point, you know, you can't do nothing but now, whether I would have went to the NFL or not, life was 10 times better than what it could have been if I chose to go a different route.

kids my age probably wouldn't see or even think that goes on in homes. Darren grew up in Little Rock,

one of 12 kids. His mom struggled with addiction. His older brothers were in gangs, one of which was shot. So football practice became a way out.

Just being away for those extra few hours, and by the time you get home, it's time to, the sun's going down, it's time to get in the house. And so that really helped me out a whole lot.

As McFadden got older, he began to drift a little, but his coaches and teachers were quick to notice. You know, you know, it just took people like that just talking to me and telling me, hey, if you actually take this serious, you can do things and then you have to get to college. McFadden listened and eventually became a razorback, climbing the depth chart quickly,
