Summary

In honor of the upcoming "Field of Dreams" game, we are making this patron-only bonus episode available to everyone.

No decade had as many beloved baseball movies as the 1980s. From "The Natural" in 1984 to "Field of Dreams" in 1989, Hollywood loved the National Pastime.

So grab some popcorn and listen as our All-Star panel discusses the controversial ending to the "The Natural," the inaccuracies of "Eight Men Out" and whether Crash Davis could take Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn deep. Justin McGuire is joined by J Daniel, Jason Foster and Willie Steele.

Hey, Baseball by the book patrons. Welcome to our second bonus episode of Baseball by the Book.

0:18.3

This one is for all patrons who have donated $5 a month or more to Baseball

0:22.8

by the book's Patreon page. I really appreciate you guys doing that. Today we're going to be talking

0:27.6

about 80s baseball movies. And I've assembled what I think is a really elite panel to talk about

0:33.5

80s baseball movies. And I'll introduce the guys who are here. We'll start off with Jay Daniel.

0:38.3

You guys probably know that name. I say a lot. He is the guy who does our social media

0:42.2

graphics for baseball by the book, all the stuff you see on Twitter and Facebook. Jay is also

0:47.1

an author who's been a guest on baseball by the book. He wrote a book called Finally, the Phillies,

0:51.9

the Royals, and the 1980 baseball season, and he runs a blog

0:55.5

called 80sbaseball.com. So he is well qualified to be here to talk about 80s baseball movies.

1:01.8

Our second panelist is Jason Foster. Jason is a deputy editor for Sporting News with an emphasis on

1:06.8

baseball. He's a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Jason and I worked

1:11.7

together at Sporting News before they unceremoniously let me go. And we also worked together at the

1:16.9

Harold and Rock Hill, South Carolina, way back when. So Jason and I have been co-workers at two

1:21.4

different places. And more importantly, for the purposes of today, we used to do a podcast called

1:26.7

Popcast, where we talked about

1:28.2

pop culture issues with a third guy who's not here because he doesn't know anything about baseball.

1:32.9

But so we're going to try to get back into the groove of that here.

1:36.0

And also, as an added bonus, Jason is something of an expert on movie soundtracks.

1:40.6

So we're going to get into a little bit of that today.

1:43.1

He's going to, I think, maybe tell us a little bit about Randy Newman when we get to The Natural, for instance.

1:47.7

Our third panelist is Willie Steele.
