Summary

Here's a preview from a new Pushkin podcast, The Loudest Girl in the World. For years, journalist and podcast host Lauren Ober wasn’t all that jazzed about herself. She was always getting in trouble, she had a lot of sensory issues and her anxiety felt off the charts. And then, she found out why — she was autistic. The Loudest Girl in the World tells the story of Lauren’s journey to understand what it means to be on the autism spectrum and how to live life as a newly diagnosed autistic person. You can hear the full episode, and more from The Loudest Girl in the World at https://podcasts.pushkin.fm/loudest?sid=thl.

Hi, happiness lab listeners, Dr. Laurie Santos here. I'm dropping into share with you a preview of

0:04.7

a new Pushkin show. It's called The Loudest Girl in the World. For years, journalist and producer

0:10.2

Lauren Ober wasn't all that jazzed about herself. She was always getting into trouble. She had a

0:15.5

lot of sensory issues, and her anxiety fell off the charts. And then, in her 40s, and right in the

0:21.8

middle of a global pandemic, she found out why. Lauren is autistic. Lauren's always been a big talker

0:28.4

and super social, so she might not be what you think of when you think of autism. And that's

0:33.2

the whole point, to try to get you to change your ideas about autism. As a scientist, I'm particularly

0:39.1

interested in how Lauren speaks about the medical industrial complexes treatment of autism,

0:43.6

the problematic history of autism evaluations, and the way gender comes into play when receiving

0:48.4

an autism diagnosis. And so, here's the preview. You can hear more from Lauren on The Loudest Girl

0:54.2

in the World, available wherever you get your podcasts. Hey there, my name is Lauren Ober,

1:01.3

and I'm a journalist and a podcast host. You might know me from some of my work, Lollip.

1:16.8

But I'm not just a worker. I'm also a loud talker, a dog owner, and a

1:22.3

pigsburger, among other descriptors that end in ER. Oh, and as of late 2020, I am also officially

1:31.7

autistic. Which came as a surprise, because I don't fit into a lot of the stereotypes about autism,

1:40.8

or what I thought I knew about autism before I found out I was autistic. But on my new show,

1:48.6

The Loudest Girl in the World, we leave the autistic tropes behind and experience neurodiversity

1:55.4

in a way it's never been portrayed before. And I know that because it's all about me.

2:05.4

I'm going to walk you through my own experience. From the time my sixth grade teacher put me in

2:11.8

a cardboard box to shut me up to the time I melt it down as an adult over a caper in my soup,

2:19.6

to my decision at 42 to finally get evaluated for autism. Since this show is all about the

2:28.4

journey of self-discovery, you're going to be right there with me. You'll tag along as I take
