Hello and welcome to Wisewalkers. I'm your host Ronald Fell Jones. This is the fourth episode in what I'm calling my legacy edition,

where I'm repackaging interviews I conducted many years ago and that are still relevant today.

The first three legacy editions featured interviews from a radio show I did about 45 years ago on KVMR radio in Nevada City, California.

This fourth edition features an interview that I did 28 years ago on a different station,

K-M-U-D in Garborville, California.

It's titled, From the Emerald Triangle, Marijuana and Health,

my 1996 interview with two Humboldt County doctors.

Humboldt is a county in northwest California, coastal redwood country where the tallest trees in the world grow.

And since the 1960s on up to today, Humboldt County is also famous for another plant that grows in abundance there, which of course is marijuana.

Humboldt County is the heart of a

part of the legendary emerald triangle, the three county region so named for the quality and volume of marijuana produced there.

Indeed, it's the largest cannabis producing region in the United States

and revered by marijuana fissionicionados around the world.

Well, in the mid-90s, I was a co-founder of a rural community hospice in southern Humboldt County,

and one of our outreach programs was a monthly radio show called Health Talk on the local

station K-M-U-D or K-M-U-D as it was commonly called. I and others took turns

hosting the program which featured interviews and conversations about local health care services and issues.

On this occasion, the show was about the health effects of smoking marijuana, and I interviewed

the two leading doctors in Southern Humboldt County, Mark Phelps and Bill Hunter.

Now this was in 1996, the same year Cannabis was legalized for medicinal use in California,

but 20 years before it was legalized for recreational use.
