0:57.0 | but the slave trade ended in 1808, ended in Britain in 1807. |
1:01.0 | And there was a Southern businessman in Mobile, Alabama, |
1:04.0 | who made a bet with a Northern businessman that he could sneak a boatload |
1:09.0 | of illegal slaves into the United States. |
1:13.0 | And he did, came in 1860, a year before the Civil War started. |
1:19.0 | And it was over somewhere between 110 and 160 slaves |
1:24.0 | who left from Weeda in Dahomey. |
1:28.0 | And Questlove's third great-grandparents, Charlie and Maggie Lewis, |
1:34.0 | were on that ship. It's an incredible story. |
