Hello, my name is Oliver Bergman and I'm the author of the piece you're about to listen to.

When I wrote this piece, which is about the sort of evil genius of advice books aimed at new parents,

I'd already been a parent for a year or two.

Of course, now I've been a parent for a bit longer.

I talk in this piece about how the subgenre of self-help books aimed at new parents

really capitalises on this desperate yearning that they have and that I had

to be told how to do it right.

And how there's this huge tension between the experts who I call the baby trainers

who think that doing it right is all about schedules and sleep training

and getting your baby to basically conform to the rhythms of modern capitalism.
