Hello, I'm Sam Knight and I'm the author of the piece that you are about to listen to.

This article was inspired by a conversation in late 2016 when it felt like the world was shaking

quite a lot after the Brexit vote and the election of Donald Trump. A group of us were

sitting around and someone said what's going to happen next and someone replied quite

unthinkingly, well the next thing that's going to happen is the queen is going to die.

I remember being struck that that was both an obvious and inevitable thing that's going to happen

but also quite how difficult it was to imagine. I think when I was reporting the story,

one of the things that emerged from going to archives and also many of the interviews that I did

was just the extraordinary level of kind of detail and precision and forethought. We put into

these national moments of change and turning of the page if you like going from one chapter to the

next. I think it's easy to imagine that the royal family has lost its relevance or lost its

grip on people's attention in your daily life and then an event will happen like the death of

Prince Philip or Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's TV interview with Oprah Winfrey when you

realize quite how deeply and mysteriously their lives are attached to ours and I'm often reminded
