From medieval physicians who thought a woman's womb could move around inside her body when distressed,

to Victorian doctors who used hysteria as a catch-well term for all kinds of health issues,

women have been frequently misdiagnosed and mistreated throughout history. In her new book Unwell Women, historian Eleanor Clegghorn charts the story, and I spoke to her

to find out more. Unwell women is a fascinating journey through women's medical history, which

reveals that there's been a long ingrained gender pain gap.

So before we go any further, what do we mean when we're talking about the gender pain gap?

The gender pain gap is a term that really sort of came into popularity about 20 years ago,

with a growing awareness in medical humanities and sociology about the way that women's pain

is treated differently in doctor's surgeries in A&E compared to men's.

So what happens in the gap, what falls into the gap, is the treatment of women's pain
