a quiet community about 40 miles north of San Francisco.

The girls were having fun playing Nintendo, board games, and trying

on makeup and Halloween costumes. Polly and her friends, Kate and Jillian, sat on her bedroom floor and played a board game.

Then Polly got up to retrieve their sleeping bags from the living room.

She opened the bedroom door and froze. A burly stranger

holding a six inch knife stood in the hallway. He pushed his way into the room and told the girls,

don't scream or I'll slit your throat. At first, Polly's friends thought this might be one of her relatives
