I'm talking to you all for an Northwest suburb of Illinois, one hour out from Chicago.

I live here with my family and here's where I've been spending the pandemic so far.

I'm out to the house right now and my dad's gardening, ribbing up the grass while his

YouTube music is playing from the phone in his pocket.

He has his favorite baseball hat on.

It has an image of a horse in the front and the hair of the horse is yarn so it blows

when the wind hits it.

He actually just got off the phone with my grandpa who was quarantined with my grandma

in Chicago.

He's quiet and he's sighing a lot.

It's a way that I can tell that he's kind of worried.

I have never really known him to express his worry.

My dad immigrated in the 70s from Mahaka, Mexico, which is where all my families from.

Here from Tutitlan del Valle, a sapoteca indigenous community of about 5,000 residents.

We call it the pueblo.

My grandpa first came to the US in the 40s as a brazero.

The brazero program was a labor contract that brought millions of Mexican workers to US

farms.

He made multiple trips between Mexico and California so he could send money to his family.

The second family member to head north was my uncle Venustiano in the 60s.
