Summary

We continue our Best of ITT series with this live episode from May 2018. Maria and Julio take the stage at DePaul University in Chicago with David Luis “Suave” Gonzalez, artist and a former juvenile lifer, to talk about Latinos and mass incarceration. Along with hearing Suave's story, Julio also interviews Maria, who at the time had been covering Suave's story for more than 25 years.

0:20.6	we recorded in 2018 pre-pandemic people. It was a conversation with David Luis Suave Gonzales,
0:29.6	the artist, the former juvenile lifer, prison reform activist, who's the star of our Pulitzer
0:35.6	Prize-winning Fuduro Studios podcast Suave. And we're going to revisit this iconic live show where
0:42.4	Suave tells his story of being a juvenile lifer in prison for 31 years. And I got to share my experience
0:50.4	of reporting on Suave for basically, at that point, had been more than 25 years.
0:56.8	This is also one of my favorite in the fix of the last seven years because you were with Suave
1:02.5	in Chicago at this live event and at the time of that recording, it had been only days in Suave
1:09.5	had been released from prison. Yeah. And you could feel the emotion in the room as you both
1:14.0	recounted the journey that led to that moment. I just loved being on stage in Chicago with Suave
1:20.6	in Julio and with Nicole producing. It was, it was a dream come true for all of us. And Suave
1:28.8	was just beaming. And this live show wouldn't have been possible without Nicole Rothwell, our former
1:36.0	lead producer, who's now a rock star senior producer at Fuduro Studios, also part of Fuduro Media.
1:42.7	So as we were talking about what shows to feature from the last seven years, we also wanted to get
1:49.8	people and producers that worked on the show for the last seven years. And Nicole sent us a very
1:54.7	sweet message to celebrate in the fix achievements. And she talked about her experience producing this
2:00.8	live conversation with Suave in Chicago, which at the time was Nicole's very first live show.
2:07.8	Looking back, I really feel so humbled that I got to produce this live show. It was, in a way,
2:13.7	it was my introduction to Fuduro, IKT, Suave. And honestly, the power of shaking up the status quo
