Hello, everyone. I'm Kimberly Adams. Welcome back to Make Me Smart, where none of us is as smart as all of us.

President Trump's tariffs and trade deals or trade agreements or frameworks of deals or whatever

have transformed the landscape of the

global economy but for some of these tariffs the future is unclear this week

in particular the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in a case challenging

the president's authority to impose some of the many many tariffs that he's

rolled out President Trump's overall

foreign policy, especially this term, is pretty significantly changing America's role in the

world, how other countries are interacting with us and how they're interacting with each other.

So we wanted to take a step back and look at just how that's playing out

and whether these changes are going to be lasting.

So here to make us smarter about this is Asma Khalid. She is the co-host of The Global Story,

which is a daily podcast from the BBC looking at the United States relationship with the rest of the world. And if her name

sounds extra familiar, it's because she was also the former White House correspondent for NPR

You've been covering this for a long time and covering Trump for a long time.

And so I do think you've got really unique insight here.

Why are tariffs Trump's economic weapon of choice?

That's an excellent question, Kimberly.

And I think it's particularly interesting given that President Trump, and even when he was Donald Trump, going back decades, his partisan politics have evolved, right?
