John 6: 1-15 - 'The feeding of the five thousand.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 439 (in 'Christ') - Many Jews and even certain Gentiles who shared their hope recognized in Jesus the fundamental attributes of the messianic "Son of David", promised by God to Israel. Jesus accepted his rightful title of Messiah, though with some reserve because it was understood by some of his contemporaries in too human a sense, as essentially political.

- 559 (in 'Jesus messianic entrance into Jerusalem') - How will Jerusalem welcome her Messiah? Although Jesus had always refused popular attempts to make him king, he chooses the time and prepares the details for his messianic entry into the city of "his father David" (abbreviated).

Thank you so much for listening.

Hope you learned something new about the Bible today. We're looking at John

0:22.4

chapter 6 verses 1 to 15. That's the gospel reading you would hear at today's Mass. And this is the

Galilee or of Tiberius, and a large crowd

0:40.9

followed him, impressed by the signs he gave by curing the sick.

0:45.9

Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.

0:50.7

It was shortly before the Jewish feast of Passover.

Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip,

0:59.2

Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?

1:03.2

He only said this to test Philip.

1:05.8

He himself knew exactly what he was going to do.

1:10.3

Philip answered, 200 dinari would only buy enough to give them

1:14.4

a small piece each. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said, there is a small boy here

1:23.4

with five barley loaves and two fish. But what is that between so many? Jesus said to them,

1:30.7

make the people sit down. There was plenty of grass there and as many as five thousand men sat down.

1:39.1

Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks and gave them out to all who were sitting ready. He then did the

1:46.5

same with the fish, giving out as much as was wanted. When they had eaten enough, he said to the

1:53.1

disciples, pick up the pieces left over so that nothing gets wasted. So they picked them up and filled 12 hampers with scraps left over from the meal of five barley loaves.

2:06.7

The people, seeing the sign that he had given, said,

2:11.2

This really is the prophet who is to come into the world.
