Manhattan's top federal prosecutor has resigned just days after the Justice Department directed her office to drop the corruption charges against Mayor Adams.

And she's not the only one stepping down.

Ali Bauman is here now with the latest on these breaking developments, Ali.

Well, Christine, in addition to the top federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York,

CBS News is learning the acting head of the DOJ's criminal division and the acting chief of public integrity division

have also resigned after refusing orders to drop the corruption case against Mayor Adams.

Interim U.S. attorney for the Southern District, Danielle Sassoon inherited this

case against Adams after her predecessor, Damien Williams, resigned following Trump's election

victory. In her resignation letter obtained and reviewed by CBS News, Sassoon pushed back against

the directive to drop the case, alleging that during a meeting with the DOJ last month, Adams' attorneys urged what amounted to quid pro quo,

allegedly offering his cooperation with the Trump administration's immigration enforcement

in exchange for dismissal of the charges.

In a second letter to Sassoon, the Deputy Attorney General, Emil Bov, accepted her resignation

while rejecting her allegations,

saying the DOJ stands by its directive and calling her refusal to do so in subordination.

In the meantime, the case is in limbo yet to be dismissed.
