| 0:22.8 | It wasn't news because the day before we had been told that Justice Breyer had decided |
| 0:27.3 | to retire from the court at the end of this term. |
| 0:30.1 | But still, when public comments are made by a Supreme Court justice at the White House, |
| 0:35.3 | and when comments are made by the President of the United States concerning the future of the |
| 0:39.2 | court, that is news. |
| 0:41.2 | And so what we're looking at today just briefly is what the President had to say and to a lesser |
| 0:45.3 | extent what Justice Breyer had to say. |
| 0:47.7 | The President's comments are the far more important in this case. |
| 0:51.6 | The President introduced the issue yesterday at the White House by |
| 0:54.6 | saying that the day was bittersweet for himself. He said, quote, Justice Breyer |
| 0:58.8 | now go back a long way, all the way back to the mid-70s when he first came on the Judiciary Committee but |
| 1:04.3 | that's another story indeed Breyer and Biden have had several points of |
| 1:08.5 | intersection the staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee that Judiciary Committee itself with Joe Biden long serving |
| 1:16.4 | on that committee and serving also as chairman of that committee. |
| 1:20.2 | And as you looked at those two men yesterday at the White House, you were struck by the fact that they were basically from the same generation, and they had shared a good deal of American history and Washington experience together. |
