Friday, January 12th, 2024. The Core 4. The four headlines you need to know.

Here's a 30-second history lesson and do not worry, I am not quizzing you after this.

The Holocaust ended in 1945.

In the eight years that Hitler's concentration camps existed, the Nazis killed 17 million people.

And to give you a modern-day equivalent, that would be like wiping out the entire

population of the Netherlands. Of those 17 million people, about 35% or 6 million of them were

European Jews, by far the highest number of any group slaughtered by the Nazis. And when World War

2 ended, bringing the Nazi reign and the Holocaust to an end,

the United Nations was formed in an effort to better organize world powers and hopefully

avoid another World War. They also, in 1945, created the International Court of Justice

within the United Nations. The goal of that court is to allow countries to legally challenge one another,

again, in an effort to avoid war. Now, why did I give you that quick history lesson? Because less than

80 years after the end of the Holocaust and the establishment of the International Court of

Justice, Israel, the state that was founded by the United Nations as a place for the Holocaust survivors

or other European Jews to settle, is now being charged with committing their own version

of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.
