I'm Albert Mueller, and this is the briefing, a daily analysis of news and events from a Christian worldview.

0:14.0

A recent study undertaken by researchers at Pennsylvania State University makes a pretty astounding claim,

0:20.0

and that is that the interaction of

0:23.0

biological fathers with infants may have effects that exceed some of the interactions of mothers

0:29.9

with infants. Now, I recognize we could be in all kinds of difficult terrain here, and frankly,

0:35.9

I'm in no position to tell you

0:37.8

whether this research is conclusive.

0:40.3

I have a larger worldview purpose in bringing this up.

0:43.3

Ellen Berry reporting for the Times tells us, quote,

0:46.3

for a study published recently in the journal Health Psychology,

0:48.9

the scientists observed three-way interactions

0:51.2

between 10-month-old infants, their fathers and their mothers,

0:53.7

and then checked in on the families when the children were two and seven.

0:56.7

They found that fathers who were less attentive to their 10-month-olds were likely to have trouble co-parenting, instead withdrawing or competing with mothers for the child's attention.

1:06.3

And at age seven, the children of those fathers were more likely to have markers of poor heart or metabolic

1:11.9

health, such as inflammation and high blood sugar. A lot of it came down to how fathers behaved

1:18.7

with these infants in what were described as, quote, three-way interactions. And they started

1:25.4

seeing how this has an effect. One of the researchers said, quote, we of course

1:29.6

expected that family dynamics, everybody in the family, fathers and mothers would impact child

1:33.9

development. But in this case, he says it was only fathers. Okay. So again, there is no claim here

1:41.3

that fathers have more impact on the child's health over time than the mother.
