The four headlines you need to know.

$580 million.

That's the amount of money the Department of Interior announced it will pay to 15 Native American tribes in order to make good on water rights agreements.

And as climate change continues to impact droughts in the West, this is a much-needed

lifeline for people living on reservations where access to reliable, clean water is still a

challenge in some places. And here's an interesting fact. In 1908, the United States Supreme Court

ruled that tribes have the right to as much water as they need to establish a permanent homeland,

and those rights stretch all the way back to when the original treaty was signed to set up the

reservation. And that last part is really important because it actually means that in water

disputes, a reservation's claim to water overrules most other jurisdictions because those treaties

were often signed before a lot of the land in the West became fully incorporated cities and

states. The $580 million will go towards pipelines, pumping stations, and other infrastructure projects

that will help get water to the reservations.

And it's a huge win for native communities with a bulk of the money going to the Navajo Nation

and the Confederate Salish and Kootenai tribes.
