The Core 4. The four headlines you need to know. An investigation into our federal prison system

found what no one is surprised to know,

that it's not great. A Department of Justice watchdog investigation found that over an eight-year

period, 344 inmates died from either suicide, homicide, or other accidents. Of the 344, 187 of them were suicides. The report found that the majority

of these deaths could have been prevented by better staffing and increased mental health

and substance abuse treatment. In some cases, they found the staff failed to coordinate across several departments

to provide necessary treatment or follow up with inmates in distress. They also found staff did not

properly conduct required rounds or counts in over a third of the inmate suicides. The Federal Bureau

of Prisons is dealing with a severe staff

shortage, which causes guards to work overtime and face exhaustion, which obviously impacts

the security of a prison. The report says that although the Bureau of Prisons has taken some

steps to address these issues, they need a better approach at addressing the chronic challenges

in the prison system to maintain a safe and secure environment

for staff and inmates.
