Hey there from the KUOW Newsroom. This is Seattle Now. I'm Ruby Deluna. Here are today's

top stories. It's Friday, August 2nd.

The State Department of Children, Youth, and Families today returned 43 young men from adult prison to a juvenile facility.

That's after a Thurston County judge found the agency blatantly violated their right to do process

before it moved the young

men to reduce overcrowding. A coalition of counties has gone to court to force DCYF to reopen

juvenile facilities to newly sentenced youths. In Pierce County, which joined the suit, Deputy

Prosecutor Michelle Luna says the situation may cause overcrowding

in county detention.

We are in fear that we will quickly reach our own capacity.

And what that means is offenders coming in, we will not have any space available to hold

them.

At DCYF, spokesperson Nancy Gutierrez said the population at its Green Hill School is still at a dangerous level.

The difficult reality is that the current numbers are resulting in dangerous levels of overcrowding,

and we are pursuing every option possible that allows us to comply with court orders
