On Wednesday, Pope Francis announced his predecessor was very sick and asked for prayers.

Yesterday, the Vatican announced that Pope Emeritus rested well and was lucid,

but his condition remains grave.

Benedict XVI served as head of the Catholic Church from 2005 to 2013,

when he became the first Pope to step down in nearly 600 years.

In his decision, he cited his advanced age and declining health of mind and body,

saying his voluntary resignation was for the good of the Church.

Since then, he's retired from public life,

dedicating himself to prayer and meditation.

Pope Francis said earlier this month that his predecessors' theological work and thought

continue to be fruitful and operative.
