Representative Adam Schiff is getting prepared to run for the top-house Democratic leadership

spot should it be vacated by Speaker Nancy Pelosi following the midterms.

Pelosi has not publicly stated that she would step down as the House Democratic leader,

whether Democrats keep or lose the majority next week.

A bill introduced by House Republicans on Thursday would push states to prioritize victims of

violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants.

The Justice for Victims of Open Borders Act would change grant disbursement through the

1984 Victims of Crime Act, which provides funding to state and local programs to help

crime victims rebuild their lives.

Officials at Amazon say the company is pausing hiring for its corporate workforce in an

effort to cut costs amid worries about the wider economic environment.

According to a memo from company executives, the pause could be in place for a few months.

In economic news this week, on Thursday, the Labor Department reported that jobless claims

dropped by 1,000 to 217,000 for the week ending in October 29.

There are currently 1.9 job openings for every unemployed person, which is keeping wages

high.

There was a slight rise in layoffs in October, but overall layoffs are down by 16 percent

for the year.
