So there have been many therapy theories over the years that have come and gone, but very few really hang around.

And one of them is from good old Sigmund Freud himself.

And it's called the tripartite mind.

And that's the idea that our mind is made up of three different

parts, what he called the id, the ego and the super ego. Now I'll forgive you for thinking,

But I do think that in understanding ourselves better, we can accept ourselves with less judgment

and overcome some of the defence mechanisms that distort our world as a way of trying to satisfy this three-part mind.

So, our adventure begins with the id, which we can think of as our

inner toddler. This part of our psyche operates on the principle of pleasure, trying to get

its needs met without any regard for consequences. The id is the part of us that screams for the extra chocolate. It demands

instant gratification and it occasionally throws a tantrum when it doesn't get its way. We all have

a little id inside us and it's this aspect that fuels our most primal and instinctual urges. Next, as we

venture into the realm of the psyche, we encounter the ego, our inner mediator. The ego is like

the referee in a tug-a-war between the id and the super-ego, which will come to in a bit,

striving to balance our primitive desires with the constraints of reality. So you imagine the ego, it's a negotiator,

mediating between this impulsive id and the moralistic super ego. The ego is like the parent,

who calmly explains to the child that they can't eat

all the chocolates because they need to save room for dinner. The ego operates on the reality
