France's Constitutional Council has given its approval to President Macron's controversial law

to raise the pension age from 62 to 64.

The nine-member body, which rules on whether new laws are constitutional,

removed some elements of the legislation, but retained its essence.

In a blow to the bill's opponents, the Council also turned down a petition for a referendum to

overall it.

President Macron's office now says the new rules will be signed into law within days.

Here outside the hotel de ville, not far from the Council's heavily protected headquarters,

opponents had gathered in the rain all afternoon. Their reaction was defiant.
