Summary

Day 13 at Roland Garros saw unpredictability and excitement in the women’s draw, the top men’s seeds playing well, rain and wind affecting conditions, and some baffling scheduling decisions. In short, it was in keeping with the themes of this year’s tournament. Catherine, David and Matt are together on the podcast to talk it all through.

In the women’s semi-finals, did Jo Konta choke against Marketa Vondrousova? What did Konta have to say about her match being scheduled on Court Simonne-Mathieu? And how did Ash Barty eventually beat Amanda Anisimova in a rollercoaster match?

The marquee match of the day was Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal, so why was the stadium so empty at the start? And how did Nadal use the conditions to his advantage?

By contrast, why does the wind irritate Djokovic so much? Why was the match stopped early despite there being at least another hour of playable conditions? And will Thiem be able to handle the mental challenge of coming back tomorrow to finish off?

Finally, looking ahead to the women’s final, will Vondrousova’s lack of experience on Chatrier harm her chances against Barty? And is it acceptable that they have been given a Not Before start time?

The Tennis Podcast will be produced daily throughout Roland Garros, The Fever-Tree Championships and Wimbledon.

Well, what a day we have just had and for a number of quite weird reasons.

0:25.9

Let's start with the introductions. I'm David Law. We've got

0:29.0

Catherine Whitaker in a bar in Paris at the moment, hence maybe a little bit of music

0:35.6

that you can hear in the background. And we've got the whole team back together because Matt

0:39.5

Roberts is here. How you doing, Matt?

0:41.1

Very well. Thank you. Although it's all gone a bit wrong at the French Open since I left,

0:45.6

doesn't it? Yes, it has a bit. Isn't it? Catherine, what is going on?

0:51.0

At the French Open, you've had lots of matches. You've had three results. One match that hasn't

0:56.1

finished. You've had rain, wind, you name it. You've had controversy. And I don't really know

1:04.4

where to start. But tell us what time is it there as we speak to you now? What is the weather like

1:09.6

outside? Well, it is a little after 8pm. It's about 20 past eight in the evening. And yes,

1:18.0

it's disgustingly windy as it has been for most of the afternoon. But we could still be playing tennis

1:25.7

in this weather. I am sat. I'm not actually quite in the hotel bar. I'm in a tent-like structure

1:34.6

attached to the hotel bar, which as far as I can gather is a sort of way that they have in Paris

1:42.8

to circumvent the no smoking indoors rules. Right. So it's very definitely an indoor structure,

1:51.0

but that stinks of fag smoke. It is delightful. I love it. But yeah, so I feel very in touch with

1:58.8

the outdoors. I can feel the wind blowing against the sort of flimsy plastic of these exterior

2:07.3

walls. And yeah, I mean, it's horrible. There's absolutely no part of my being that would want to be
