In the deep woods of New England, the quiet always doesn't feel empty. It settles in around you.

It presses in from all sides, not loud enough to be noticed at first, but present enough that you become aware of it the longer you stand there.

It's the kind of quiet that makes you pay attention to your surroundings, even when nothing is

happening.

About 40 miles south of Boston, in the towns of Freetown and Fall River, there is a place where

that feeling is more pronounced than it should be.

It stretches across roughly 5,000 acres of land, dense Atlantic white cedar swamps, uneven terrain,

and long sections of forest where visibility drops off quickly once you leave the main trails.

It's known as the Freetown Fall River State Forest.

To some passing through, it looks like any other protected area.

It's a place for hiking, for wildlife, for getting out of the city, and getting into something

quieter.

But for the people who live nearby, the reputation of that land is something entirely different.

It sits at the center of what has come to be called the Bridgewater Triangle.

It's roughly 200 square miles associated with a wide range of unexplained events. Over the years, it has been linked to

reports that don't fit neatly into a single category. Strange sightings, unusual environmental

events, and accounts that seem to blur the line between folklore and lived

experience. Whether those stories are taken literally or not, the consistency of them has shaped

how the area is viewed. In June of 2019, something happened that gave that reputation a physical

maker. At approximately 922 in the morning, a large granite formation known as Profile Rock collapsed.

For generations, the rock has been known for its resemblance to a human face, often referred

to as the old man of Joshua's Mountain.
