Summary
🎙️ Throwback Thursdays on Sober Awkward!
Every Thursday, we’re serving up a little slice of Sober Awkward history – a short, powerful clip from one of our most-loved past episodes.
Why? Because sometimes, the right words hit differently the second time around. Whether you’re new here or a long-time listener, these throwback moments are here to keep you company, remind you you’re not alone, and offer that little nudge of insight or encouragement just when you need it.
Think of it as a midweek check-in. Something bite-sized to walk with, laugh at, or quietly reflect on. And if the clip hits home? You can go back and listen to the full episode anytime – just follow the link in the show notes.
We know one episode a week isn’t always enough – so here’s your extra helping of honesty, humour, and a bit of awkwardness to get you through the week.

| 0:00.0 | Now, you're probably wondering what I'm doing here on a lovely Thursday morning. |
| 0:07.8 | Well, it's Vic here with your Thursday retrospective episode of Sober Awkward. |
| 0:13.7 | You might be thinking, hang on, haven't I heard this before? |
| 0:17.4 | And the answer is yes, yes, you have. |
| 0:19.3 | But like all good drinking stories and bad toilet humour, |
| 0:23.4 | they both get better with age, or at least less embarrassing the more times we tell them. |
| 0:29.1 | On Thursdays, we dust off our favourite episodes from the archives, |
| 0:34.2 | something you might have missed, loved or listened to at the start of your sober life. |
| 0:38.4 | Think of it as a journey back in time, or a jolly leftover, a bit like lasagna that tastes |
| 0:43.9 | even better on day two. So sit back, relax and enjoy this vintage slice of awkwardness. |
| 0:50.7 | A retrospective episode reheated and served right to your ears. |
| 1:01.2 | We've become so ingrained that holidays equals hotels, equals drinks. We actually |
| 1:05.8 | started looking at the idea of staying in a yoga retreat style hotel. Okay. Yeah. That was one of the |
| 1:10.1 | freebies we could get. So they had classes, they had healthy food and there was no alcohol at all at the hotel. So that was quite a good way if you want to still stay in a hotel but have no temptation. It's not even on the menu. That could work for you. Or you could go on one of those sober retreats. I know a lot of women do that. They go away for a sober holiday. |
| 1:27.8 | And there's loads of companies that run them. And you can just have a week of doing yoga and all those things like you talk about healthy food and meeting like-minded people. |
| 1:35.4 | Perfect thing to do as your first sober holiday. Yeah. We actually felt a bit guilty about the idea of staying somewhere like that because we were going to bring a 10-month hold into an environment that was fairly zen. |
| 1:45.2 | And he likes screaming and throwing food at breakfast. And we were like, oh, we would have felt, we would have felt so on edge that he was ruining everyone else's day. Yeah, the hipsters wouldn't be happy with that way. Yeah. We just got really judging looks by yogis. So we didn't end up doing that one. But that is an option that you could do. |
| 2:01.5 | Yeah, that is a option that you could do. |
| 2:01.5 | Yeah, that is a good idea, I think, going somewhere where they don't have alcohol. Even in India, they don't really drink alcohol or one of those Arab Emirates countries, like which... Dubai, Abu Dhabi. Yeah, some of those countries, they don't drink alcohol. So that can actually be a really good idea. I found that calling ahead to a hotel, now this is a really good tip. If you are sober, it might be a good idea to book a hotel and then phone in advance and actually they will remove the mini bar for you. If it's triggering, like get on top of it and think, well, what's going to make me trigger on this holiday and what can I do about it in advance um and you can even ask for that welcome drink to be replaced and say look |
| 2:39.6 | i don't drink i don't want any alcohol around me and when i arrive i would like that to be respected and |
| 2:44.9 | i think now because people don't drink as much as they used to and people are more um used to being around |
| 2:50.7 | non-drinkers i think that would be something that would be okay. If you think that the boozy environment of a hotel might be too much for you, then there are plenty of other accommodation options. So we're talking about options where you control the drinks that come in and out of the room. So for example, we say in an Airbnb in Bali in Bali, it was much, much cheaper. There was much more space. It also came with a cleaner, which was pretty glorious. Did she rub oil into your stomach? No, she, tell you what, funny story. She ended up babysitting Sunny. Oh, yeah, nice. And the first night we came back and, like, how was it oh great i just given him a massage so she had like |
