Summary

You probably never thought an innocent story about the history of the pig industry in Israel would be upended by a massive exposé revealing decades of pedophilia and abuse. Think again.

While working on our most recent episode, a seemingly unrelated news article had massive implications for a nearly-completed story.

Naomi Schneider edited and scored this special with music from Blue Dot Sessions. Sela Waisblum created the mix.

Okay, go. Hey, Israel Story listeners, it's Mishie. I am here in the studio with

0:35.1

our producer Yoshi Field, hei-yo-shi. Hey Mishie, how you doing? Good. And as an

0:40.0

extra bonus, we are going to give you a little behind-the-scenes peek into the

production of the episode that we just released about pigs in Israel. And Yosh, you

0:54.3

worked on the story that we ended up calling a Zionist pig for how long? I

1:00.4

started before COVID, so more than a year. Okay, you're a real pig expert. It was

1:05.7

actually slated to be an episode in our last season. Correct. And one of the

1:09.8

reasons that that didn't happen was what we are here to talk about. Yeah, so for

1:15.5

the pig story, we interviewed a lot of different people, activists, farmers,

1:19.6

intellectuals, reporters. Basically, one of the main interviewees for the story,

1:24.7

we ended up having to cut. That interviewee was Yuhudimashizav, who is Yuhudimashizav?

1:31.1

Well, to begin with, he's an ultra-orthodox Jew. In fact, he's, I would say, the most

1:37.1

well-known ultra-orthodox Jew in Israel. He's sort of a national figure. Right. At

1:44.0

the time, he was very famous because he was the head of Zaka, which is an

1:48.2

emergency relief international organization. He was also in the news a lot

1:51.9

around that time, early COVID days, as sort of this bridge between ultra-religious

1:56.8

and secular. And specifically, he had lost his parents to COVID. And it was at a
