Awards Chatter Podcast, I'm the host Scott Feinberg, and my guest today was one of the biggest

rock and roll stars and movie stars of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Indeed, he was a teen idol who the Los Angeles Times has described as the Justin Timberlake of his day.

On the music side of the ledger, he had 31 singles that made the charts,

seven that cracked the top 10, and two, Venus and Y, both from 1959, that reached number one.

Meanwhile, on the film side, he and one-time Mickey Mouse Club mascot here,

Annette Funicello, were teamed by Samuel Z. R. Koff's American International Pictures

in seven beach movies, 1963's Beach Party, 1964's Muscle Beach Party,

Bikini Beach, and Pajama Party, 1965's Beach Blanket Bingo,

and how to stuff a wild bikini, and 1987's Back to the Beach.

All of which cost only a little, grossed a lot,

and made the two of them, in the words of Vanity Fair,

as inseparable a screen duo in the public's eye as Fred and Ginger, or Tracy and Hepburn.
