Summary

This is Part 3 in the Frank Canton series. See links below for Parts 1 2. https://open.spotify.com/episode/04X4DO7USW9EzqK0xFNhSJ https://open.spotify.com/episode/0Nh2kWENOVK8xwZgy5SLf6   Things in Johnson County, Wyoming had finally come to a head. After the Wyoming Stock Growers Association allegedly lynched James Averell and Ella Watson, there was a series of repercussion killings. When respected cowboys Orly Jones and John A. Tisdale were also found brutally murdered, all eyes were cast on Frank Canton (Although many now suspect noted assassin, Tom Horn). Opting to not take his chances in a Johnson County courtroom, Canton fled temporarily to Chicago as his legal team worked on his behalf. But he would return and return with a vengeance. Frank came riding back into Johnson County with a small army of cattle barons and hired guns from Texas, a kill list in their hands. And their first target was a little someone known as Nate Champion.   How the West was Fucked | Granville Stuart - https://open.spotify.com/episode/3O5I1gQpOPrBnzYNotc9VA   Check out my website for more true tales from the wild and woolly west https://www.wildwestextra.com/   Email me! https://www.wildwestextra.com/contact/   Buy me a coffee! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/wildwest   Free Newsletter! https://wildwestjosh.substack.com/   Join Patreon for bonus content! https://www.patreon.com/wildwestextra   Become a YouTube Paid Member for bonus content! https://www.youtube.com/c/WildWestExtravaganza   Alias Frank Canton by Robert K. Back in 1884, over Montana Way, there was this cattleman by the name of Granville Stewart,

0:35.1

who organized himself a vigilante committee that came to be

0:38.2

known as Stuart Stranglers. And this was in response to the same stuff we've been discussing in this

0:43.7

series. Montana had its own version of the WSGA, the Montana Stock Growers Association, and they

0:50.7

too had their hands full with rustlers and thieves. Fed up with all the nonsense, Granville and his stranglers went on a murder spree,

0:57.9

killing anywhere from 20 to 100 rustlers, or alleged rustlers.

1:02.4

It's not like Stewart's stranglers were exactly all that concerned with proper judicial proceedings.

I'd recommend a series on

Granville that my friends did over at How the West was Fucked. Linking the show notes. I think you'll

really enjoy it. Spoiler alert. Not only were Stuart Stranglers never held responsible for these

1:22.3

lynchings, but Granville himself would go on to live a very long life, becoming an accomplished

1:27.3

author and

1:28.1

politician, never doing so much as one day in jail.

1:31.5

And it was his success and lack of accountability that would be the model that the WSGA looked

1:36.6

to for inspiration when it came to their own troubles down there in Johnson County.
