So that gets us to part two and our Francis Drake Saga.

Last time we covered the early life of Drake, his upbringing amid the early years of the English

reformation, his life as an apprentice seaman, and then his work as a young sailor and officer

on ships applying the coastal trade routes of Western Europe.

After that, we followed Drake as he became involved in the slave trading ventures of his second

cousin, John Hawkins.

The episode concluded with the defeat of Hawkins and Drake at the Battle of San Juan de Luea in 1568.

This defeat left Drake, who we have seen was a very religious and righteous man, angry and bitter towards Spain and the Catholic Church.

He vowed vengeance against the Catholic Church.
