As part of the Foundations and Soil Plant series, I wanted to revisit this conversation with

Ben Hartman around lean farming because it continues to influence how I think about cultivation

and really all systems, not just soil and fertility, but workflow, efficiency, and decision

making in a production environment. Even though this episode was recorded years ago,

the ideas around lean farming and Kai Zen, which stands for continuous improvement,

muda, which means waste, and right tool in the right place at the right time, are just as

relevant today, especially as cultivation gets more competitive and margins get tighter.

I now incorporate this philosophy into many aspects of my life.

It can be as complicated as how we run kiss organics,

or as simple as where do we store the toilet paper in the house

to reduce distance from where we store it to where we need it.

Freeing up time by having leaner practices

means more time focused on other aspects of

cultivation like scouting or IPM, or for a home grower, more time with friends and family

or other hobbies. Since the original release of this podcast, Ben has written additional books

on the subject, launched a master class, and has continued to refine these ideas and processes.

If you're running a commercial facility, or even just trying to make your own cultivation

more efficient and repeatable, there's a lot here that still holds up.
