Robert Gates was the 22nd Secretary of Defense, serving under both Presidents George W. Bush and Barak Obama. He had previously served as Director of the CIA, from 1991 to 1993, Deputy National Security Advisor from 1989 to 1991, and Deputy Director of the CIA from 1986-1989. He is the author of From the Shadows, Duty, A Passion for Leadership, and Exercise of Power: American Failures, Successes, and a New Path Forward in the Post-Cold War World.
