Summary

“Let no one despise you for your youth.” Those were Paul’s words to Timothy. But is that even an issue in today’s culture obsessed with catering to and seeking youthfulness? Youth is highly prized, while seasoned, wise leaders are tossed to the curb. So many churches have turned to attractive, cool, yet inept leaders who have more swagger than biblical knowledge. So how is this damaging the Church and what does it mean to have biblical church leadership that’s more useful than it is hip? Thankfully some churches still hire unpopular nerds like Todd & Carl who possess more Biblical know-how than chic, and we've got Aimee to validate that.If this week's Mortification of Spin has benefit you then you will be interested in Ministry in the Church by Eric Alexander as a free audio download from the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. Today, from the Alliance. Today we want to talk about the implications of the most incomprehensible verse in the Bible.

1:04.2

It isn't one that you'll find in the more obscure passages in Daniel or Revelation.

1:09.1

It's actually one that you find in Paul's pastoral epistles,

1:13.2

specifically his first letter to Timothy, his young colleague. In 1 Timothy chapter 4 and

1:19.8

verse 12, Paul says this, and as I've said, this is, I think, completely incomprehensible to us today. Paul says this, let no one despise you

1:30.5

for your youth. And it's incomprehensible because the idea today that somebody would be despised for

1:38.7

their youth is so far outside of our cultural framework as to sound completely bizarre. We live in a world where

1:48.3

youth is that which is prized. The fashion industry is predicated on selling clothes to the youth or

selling clothes to older people who want to look like the youth. Plastic surgeons, generally speaking, do not train

2:02.7

in order to be able to operate on people to make them look older. By and large, they are

2:08.5

trained to make people look younger. People do not dye their hair in order to add years to their

age. They die their hair in order to take years away. So we

live in a culture where youth has become highly prized. And we want to talk today about how this is
