So tell me why I've become more of an introvert in terms of the signal to noise ratio?

0:17.0

Yeah, so one of the ways I tend to think about our nervous system, but all our senses are designed off what's thought of as

0:24.4

proportional change. So the story I would usually tell is think of the darkest

0:28.3

closet in your home. You go in completely dark, you light one candle, it's it's like wow you'll notice a big

0:34.4

difference now imagine you have that same closet there's 99 candles lit you light one

0:39.6

more and kind of nothing right you don't notice much change at all. So that highlights

0:45.0

how all of our nervous system and senses are designed to interact with the world. It's

0:48.8

about not only the change, but the proportion of change.

0:52.6

So a quantity of one is meaningless.

0:54.7

Quantity of one against a background of nothing,

0:57.2

crazy big response, against a big background

0:59.9

that's filled with light.

1:01.2

One candle makes no difference. So with our nervous system it's the same if we're used to a really

1:06.7

loud environment thinking you know we go to concert all the time or live in a big city and

1:11.0

hear traffic our nervous system gets used to that. The background level, what I would

1:15.3

think of is the noise is ratcheted way up. So to get that proportional response, we need a big

1:21.2

change, right, which when we're young a lot of us enjoy right going out late at night

1:26.4

listening to loud music things like that, but we need that to create the contrast when we're living in a much more peaceful environment listening to

1:34.7

you know light with beautiful music or you know the sound of a chime maybe is enough for

1:40.0

our nervous system really to lock in on it in nature, all those things the background

1:45.0

noise level is so low, you don't need much of a change or contrast to really notice a big

1:50.9

response.
