... Hello, friends, and welcome back to the rabbit hole.

0:29.5

I'm your host, Danny, and today we are talking about forever chemicals.

0:32.8

So I told you last week, we were going to do it.

0:34.6

So let's do it.

0:36.2

It is as bad as you think it is. And honestly,

0:40.4

it's probably worse than what I could find on the internet. And you all already know that I can't

0:46.1

pronounce half these words. So I'm going to do my best. Let's just do it. Let's just do it.

0:53.0

What are forever chemicals? They are a chemical bond that is so strong that they are nearly indestructible.

1:03.0

They do eventually break down, but it takes like thousands of years. The most common ones that we know and the ones that we talk about today are

1:14.2

PFAs and BPAs. PFAs are per and poly floral alcohol substances and they are a group of synthetic

1:25.2

fluorine-based chemicals called fluorocarbons.

1:30.6

Because they use like this carbon fluoride bond, which is like so super strong.

1:37.8

So we're talking like PFOA, PFOS, Gen X, these types of bonds are good for letting air pass through, but not much else gets through them.

1:51.7

Which is why they're super good at like stain resistant type things because you can spray it on something or like a starch.

1:58.5

You can spray it on something.

1:59.9

The air will get through,

2:01.7

but water's not getting through those suckers, stains, anything else that gets spilled on that,

2:06.3

that's not getting through. These were discovered in the 1930s, and their use was kept from

2:13.8

the EPA or the Environmental Protection Agency until the late 1990s.

2:18.9

It's like everyone knew just how bad they actually were, but didn't want them to be taken away.
