Summary

Covering nearly one third of the land surface of the globe, forests make a wide range of direct and indirect contributions to human well-being. Home to most of the world's terrestrial biodiversity, they also play an essential role in climate change mitigation, removing about a quarter of the CO2 that human activities add to the atmosphere. Worldwide, millions of hectares of forests and other types of vegetation burn every year. Fire dynamics are shaped by a complex set of factors, including human activity and climate.

0:08.0

Covering one-third of the globe's land surface, forests are the lungs of the planet, so when they burn, it's not just the trees that go.

0:18.0

Its entire ecosystems that fall apart, with dire consequences for all of us.

When climate activist Greta Thunberg went to Divorce in 2019 to tell world leaders that

thousands of homes and caused many deaths. But beyond the human suffering and material loss they cause,

0:57.7

forest fires have a direct impact on ecosystems,

1:01.0

causing habitat and biodiversity loss, affecting water and soils.

1:05.4

By releasing massive amounts of greenhouse gases,

1:08.7

they also have a direct impact on climate change and

1:11.9

pollute the air we breathe.

1:14.0

So why are forests so essential to life in our planet?

1:18.1

Well, we, quite simply, depend on forests for our survival.

1:22.3

They provide us with food, wood, water, fuel and medicines.

1:26.8

And they support the livelihoods of over 1.6 billion people

globally. And besides providing habitats for animals and livelihoods for humans, they also protect

1:36.4

us from floods and erosion and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Indeed, after oceans, forests

are the world's largest storehouses of carbon.
