It is December 29, 1940.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt rolls his wheelchair through the White House hallways and into

the diplomatic reception room.

There are guests in the room, the president's mother, and the actor's Clark Gable and Carol

Lombard.

Roosevelt spreads his speech out in front of him and steadies himself in front of a microphone.

All across the nation even overseas, people huddle around their radios.

It is in fact the largest radio audience ever gathered.
