In our nation's capital, Memorial Day was marked with a wreathling ceremony at the Tomb

of the Unknown Soldier, followed by President Donald Trump's remarks to Gold Star families.

In his speech, the president paused to pay respect of fallen service members, briefly criticized

his predecessor, and announced a big celebration next month in D.C.

ABC's Christiane Cordero has the details.

It's a tradition that goes back almost a century.

The president places a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

and Gold Star families to thank them directly. For the families of the fallen, you feel the absence of your heroes every day.

In the familiar laugh no longer heard, the empty space at Sunday dinner, or the want of a hug

or a pat on the back that will never come again.

The president lauded the military service and sacrifice before touting his own accomplishments.

Their valor gave us the freest, greatest, and most noble republic ever to exist on the face of the earth,

a republic that I am fixing after a long and hard four years.

That was a hard four years we went through.
