Join me every Monday for a quick burst of inspiration on our “Monday Moments” segments.
Today, in honor of Memorial Day, I share a story I seldom share that continues to have a powerful effect on my life today.
For America by Jack Buck
Since this nation was founded under God,
More than 200 years ago,
We’ve been the bastion of freedom,
The light which keeps the free world aglow.
We do not covet the possessions of others,
We are blessed with the bounty we share.
We have rushed to help other nations,
Anything... Anytime...Anywhere.
War is just not our nature.
We won’t start, but we will end the fight.
If we are involved,
We shall be resolved,
To protect what we know is right.
We’ve been challenged by a cowardly foe,
Who strikes and then hides from our view.
With one voice, we say there’s no choice today,
There is only one thing to do.
Everyone is saying the same thing,
And praying that we end these senseless moments we are living.
As our fathers did before, we shall win this unwanted war.
As our children will enjoy the future we’ll be giving.

I want you to think back to those moments just days |
0:55.3 | after September 11th. Well, the very first sporting event to take place nationally was actually |

1:07.0 | concerned that it could be another symbol of an attack, which would draw fire. |
1:12.5 | And many people were scared to show up. But my sister and I, trying to be defined, trying to stand up |
1:16.9 | for those who no longer could stand up for themselves, went down with about 40,000 others to Bush |
1:21.1 | Stadium in downtown St. Louis, and were packed with an awful lot of anxiety. As we walked through increased security, |
1:29.0 | as we went through metal screenings, |
1:30.6 | as we approached our seats, |
1:31.9 | as we waited for the event to begin, |
1:33.8 | which was not with a typical baseball game. |
1:36.7 | But this event began instead with my hero, |
1:40.0 | a veteran of wars over in Europe, |
1:42.4 | taking the podium. |
1:43.2 | His name is Jack Buck. He read a poem that he had |
1:47.3 | written on the 11th of September as he himself mourned what he had lost, what we had lost, what we were |
1:53.3 | struggling with, and yet his powerful spirit to push forward in spite of it. The poem begins with |
