When Catherine Reitman first started working on her show Workin’ Moms, she never would have imagined she would be where she is today. What started as a small Canadian comedy, has quickly turned into a smashing Netflix success that resonates with a diverse audience. In today’s episode, Lindsay Pinchuk releases a conversation she had with Catherine in 2021---before she even knew the concept of this podcast. Lindsay knew that it was a conversation she had to share---even over a year after it took place.
While Catherine is the star of her own show, and her real life husband Philip Sternberg, plays her fictional husband, Workin’ Moms is not autobiographical. The inspiration behind the show comes from Catherine’s desire to normalize the life of working mothers. Through a collection of stories, Catherine has written and produced the show in a way that redefines the meaning of motherhood by showing every truth and accuracy imaginable. Even though motherhood is an important role in a woman’s life, it is not her sole identity. After all, all mothers are just human.
Tune into this episode of Dear FoundHer… for this conversation with Catherine Reitman. Learn more about the meaning and inspiration behind the show, why it’s important to humanize mothers, and what you can expect in the newly released season six of Workin’ Moms.
Quotes
• “I definitely have a perspective that I didn't have a year ago or five years ago. And I do think motherhood and working motherhood has helped me come to that.” (09:43-09:51)
• “There was a moment where it was a small Canadian show that I was very proud of. But I sort of believed that it was just an indulgent little show that would only really connect with a handful of women, and would probably stay below the radar. But when it hit Netflix, we could never have predicted the way it would explode.” (24:21-24:46)
• “Being recognized is extraordinary. But what really hits, is when someone comes up to you and says, “Thank you. I feel seen, this show hits.” And that's when I realized all of this has meaning.” (25:33-25:52)
• “Take a moment, and consider that moms are not just mothers. Prior to that, they were just women and flawed people who were trying to figure out what they were going to do with their lives.” (27:34-27:49)
